Areas of Concentration

Experience Our Student-Centered Curriculum

Designing an Area of Concentration or Course of Study is one of the most attractive features of the Bachelor of General Studies degree program.

Students with diverse professional and/or academic interests or goals can design a curriculum that makes sense to them and furthers their professional growth and development far more than a standard, one-size-fits-all program.

Choosing the Area of Concentration

Students may select upper-level coursework from any UM department and even blend curriculum from distinct departments to create the individualized Area of Concentration. Current and incoming BGS students in Junior Standing can also integrate our current online courses and our Saturday Option Curriculum to complete existing Areas of Concentration. To see the most updated list of programs and departments that students can choose for the Area of Concentration, please visit the University of Miami majors and programs page (some restrictions apply).

Students who want an AoC within the Miami Business School (e.g. Management, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Economics, Business Technology, Entrepreneurship) must maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in all of the School of Business courses (lower and upper-level classes) and must have approval from advisor to take those courses.

The approval process requires that the student submit the proposed coursework in writing to the Academic Dean in Continuing Studies along with a rationale stating why/or how these specific courses can benefit him/her in their professional or personal endeavors. The Academic Advisor has additional information about the process and can assist you to complete this important step at the right time for you.

A few important items to note for the Area of Concentration:

  • Students are required to earn a C or better in all coursework within the Area of Concentration and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Area of Concentration coursework will require departmental consents in accordance with course catalog.
  • Areas of Concentration may have some restrictions and/or may only be designated for a specific program major/minor (please contact your advisor for more information)
  • Students may apply previously taken University of Miami courses that are at a 300-level or above, in which a student has earned a C or better, to their Area of Concentration

Prior to submitting an Area of Concentration BGS students are required to successfully complete the interdisciplinary course: ENG 333 with a grade of a C or better.

After completing ENG 333 (Writing the Research Paper) students are eligible to submit their AOC rationale.
